What are the main symptoms of type 1 diabetes?

Thirst

Diabetic thirst is like no other thirst you can imagine. You’ll want water more than anything else, yet no matter how much of it you gulp down you’ll never be quenched.

Diabetes symptom review: Annoying.

Wee

The reason you’ll be so thirsty is because your body won’t be able to hold onto fluids. They’ll go straight through you, leaving you needing the toilet just as soon as you’ve finished using the toilet.

Diabetes symptom review: Concerning.

Sleep

You’ll be tired. Really tired. Movement will feel like a terrible chore that you just can’t be bothered with. You’ll try sleeping, but you’ll have to get up to use the toilet or have a drink.

Diabetes symptom review: Tiring.

Hunger

Your body will be craving substance, it just won’t be able to process it. It’ll be screaming for you to feed it but there’ll be no point, as food will be causing it a world of problems. You’ll also not have read my very useful food guide yet.

Diabetes symptom review: Starving.

Weight loss

Because your body can’t handle food, it’ll turn to extreme measures and start eating itself. Yep, you read that right. You can lose a few stone over night when things get really bad, at which point you should probably go to hospital, ideally with a friend just in case you fall over, which you might do very soon.

Diabetes symptom review: Go to A&E.

Sickness

Another sign that food isn’t sitting too well will be the urge to vomit. Your digestive system won’t be working properly, so food will only have one place to go.

Diabetic illness is no walk in the pancreatic park.

Diabetes symptom review: Seriously, go see a doctor. Stop reading this.

Irritation

Because of your lack of sleep, your headache, your constant trips to the toilet, your hunger and the fact none of your clothes fit anymore, you’ll start feeling annoyed. The smallest thing will set you off. Argh!

Diabetes symptom review: Friendship destroying.

Any of the above symptoms look familiar? If you can spot these signs in yourself or in someone else, it’s time to visit the doctor. Explain what’s happening and they’ll either book you in asap or tell you to go to A&E, depending on how serious things are.
